Container Drayage and Transloading: When to Combine Both Services
Container Drayage and Transloading: When to Combine Both Services
For many importers shipping through PortMiami and Port Everglades, the most efficient logistics strategy combines container drayage with transloading services. But when does this combination make sense, and when is direct drayage to your facility the better choice?
What Is Transloading?
Transloading is the process of transferring cargo from an ocean container into domestic trailers or smaller trucks at a facility near the port. Instead of draying the full container to your distant warehouse, you dray it to a nearby CFS facility, unload it, and reload the cargo onto outbound trucks headed to multiple destinations.
When Drayage + Transloading Saves Money
Long-distance final delivery: If your warehouse is 100+ miles from the port, draying the container round-trip is expensive. Transloading near the port and shipping via dry van or LTL is often cheaper. Overweight containers: Split heavy containers into two legal-weight loads via transloading rather than paying overweight permit fees. Multi-destination shipments: One container going to three different customers is best transloaded and split.
When Direct Drayage Is Better
If your warehouse is within 30 miles of the port and you can receive the full container, direct drayage avoids the extra handling cost of transloading. For fragile goods where each touch point increases damage risk, fewer handlings is better. For small volumes that don’t justify transloading fees, direct delivery wins.
