Drop and Hook vs Live Load: Container Drayage Options in Miami
Drop and Hook vs Live Load: Which Drayage Option Is Right for You?
When arranging container drayage from PortMiami or Port Everglades, one key decision is whether to use a drop and hook or live load arrangement at your facility. Each has advantages depending on your operation and volume.
What Is Live Load Drayage?
In a live load (also called live unload), the drayage driver waits at your warehouse while the container is unloaded. The driver then takes the empty container and returns it to the port depot. This is the most common drayage arrangement for smaller importers.
What Is Drop and Hook Drayage?
With drop and hook, the driver drops the loaded container and chassis at your facility and immediately leaves — no waiting. A separate trip (or the same driver later) picks up the empty container once you’ve finished unloading. This requires you to have enough yard space for the container and chassis.
Pros and Cons of Each
Live load advantages: Lower drayage cost (one trip), no yard space needed for container storage, container returned same day (minimizing detention charges). Live load disadvantages: Wait time charges if unloading takes more than 1-2 hours, driver idle time, and pressure to unload quickly.
Drop and hook advantages: No wait time charges, unload on your schedule, driver productivity (they can do another move while you unload). Drop and hook disadvantages: Additional trip charge for empty pickup, chassis rental fees while container sits at your facility, need yard space, and detention risk if you hold the container too long.
Which Is Best for Your Operation?
If you can unload a container in under 2 hours, live load is usually more cost-effective. If unloading takes 3+ hours or your team’s schedule doesn’t align with delivery times, drop and hook gives you flexibility. For high-volume importers receiving multiple containers daily, cross-dock operations with a mix of both methods is ideal.
