Moving 115-Meter Wind Turbine Blades Through Florida in 2026: A Heavy Haul Project Guide

The blade is 115 meters long. That is roughly the wingspan of an Airbus A380, laid horizontally on a chassis, sweeping out across two lanes of Florida interstate. Vestas’s V236-15.0 MW offshore blade clocks in at 115.5 meters. Siemens Gamesa’s SG 14-236 DD runs 115 meters. These are no longer prototype dimensions — they are the standard sizes shipping in 2026 for the global wind sector, and they pass through Florida ports more often than most people realize, even with the choppy U.S. offshore wind permitting landscape.

Moving a single blade by road is a project, not a load. It requires permits, escorts, route engineering, utility coordination, and a heavy-haul carrier that has actually done it before. Here is what 2026 looks like on the ground in Florida.

The 2026 U.S. wind context — and why Florida still matters

The U.S. offshore wind pipeline went through significant turbulence in late 2025 and the first half of 2026. A federal judge struck down the January 2025 executive order blocking wind projects in December 2025, and the government dropped its appeal on June 10, 2026. But five East Coast offshore wind projects — Vineyard Wind, Revolution Wind, Coastal Virginia, Sunrise Wind, and Empire Wind — remain paused. In March 2026 the TotalEnergies New York Bight and Carolina Long Bay leases were cancelled. In April 2026, Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind were cancelled.

Florida does not have an offshore wind pipeline of its own — and didn’t before the freeze. But Florida’s ports remain a transit corridor for blades and components destined for installations as far away as Texas, the Midwest, and Latin America. Wind components are projected to be a “standout” multipurpose vessel cargo for 2026, according to industry reporting, and the Gulf Coast more broadly has been absorbing volume — Port of Galveston alone imported approximately 528 blade and tower pieces since April 2025.

Closer to home, JAXPORT has been positioning for heavier project cargo. The JEA powerline raise near Blount Island, lifting clearance to 205 feet, completes at the end of 2026 — and that single piece of infrastructure work changes what can move through Jacksonville onto Florida and Georgia roadways.

A 100-meter blade — let alone a 115-meter blade — exceeds the self-issue length parameter on its own and triggers a super-load engineering review: route survey, structural analysis of every bridge on the proposed path, utility coordination for overhead lines, traffic management plan, escort planning, and very often time-of-day restrictions (overnight, off-peak, weekend windows).

Florida penalties for moving non-compliant loads are sharp: $0.05 per pound over legal weight, and up to $1,000 per violation for over-width, over-height, or over-length. On a single blade move, those penalties can stack into the tens of thousands within a single trip if a carrier cuts corners.

What a real wind blade move involves

If you are coordinating a blade move out of PortMiami, Port Everglades, JAXPORT, or Tampa onto a Florida inland route or up toward Georgia, the project plan looks like this:

  1. Route engineering, weeks before the load arrives. Every bridge, every overhead line, every roundabout, every traffic signal, every overpass clearance is documented. Software helps; physical drive-throughs still happen on the marginal sections.
  2. FDOT super-load permit application. Engineering data, route map, escort plan, and timing. Approval timelines vary; 2-4 weeks for a clean application is typical.
  3. Utility coordination. Power lines, traffic-signal mast arms, fiber, and railroad-crossing gates may need temporary lifting, tilting, or de-energization. Each utility has its own protocols, and each adds calendar time.
  4. Pilot car and police escort schedule. Florida requires escorts on a sliding scale by load dimensions. Super-loads typically require front and rear civilian escorts and, on certain corridors, FHP escorts during the move.
  5. Specialized trailer. Blade-specific trailers — extendable, often with rear-steering bogies — are the equipment of last resort and they are not on every yard.
  6. The move itself. Usually overnight or pre-dawn, often a single one-shot run because re-permitting an aborted move is painful.
