Container Drayage and Customs Bonded Transport in Miami
Container Drayage and Customs Bonded Transport in Miami
When your import container needs to move from the port to a different customs location before final clearance, you need bonded drayage. This type of container drayage is governed by U.S. Customs regulations and requires a licensed bonded carrier — not just any trucking company.
What Is Bonded Drayage?
Bonded drayage moves containers that haven’t been fully cleared by customs from one bonded location to another. Common scenarios include: moving a container from PortMiami to a bonded warehouse under a T&E (Transportation and Exportation) entry, transferring cargo between bonded facilities, or moving containers to an FTZ for duty deferral.
Requirements for Bonded Carriers
Not every drayage company can perform bonded moves. The carrier must hold a CBP customs bond and be registered as an authorized bonded carrier. This bond guarantees that the carrier will deliver the container to the designated bonded facility without tampering. If a bonded container is lost or its seal is broken during transit, the carrier’s bond is liable for the duties owed.
In-Bond Drayage at Miami Ports
At PortMiami and Port Everglades, in-bond moves are common for importers using bonded warehousing to defer duty payments. The process involves filing an in-bond entry (type 61 or 62) with CBP, picking up the sealed container, and delivering it to the destination bonded facility without breaking the seal. The receiving facility must then report the container’s arrival to CBP.
