Corrosive Materials Shipping: IATA and IMDG Class 8 Regulations
Shipping Corrosive Materials Under IATA and IMDG Class 8
Class 8 corrosive substances—acids, alkalis, and other materials that damage living tissue or corrode metals—present unique challenges for air and ocean transport. South Florida businesses in the chemical, cleaning, and manufacturing industries regularly ship corrosives requiring hazmat compliance under IATA and IMDG regulations.
What Qualifies as Class 8
Corrosive materials cause visible destruction or irreversible damage to living tissue at the site of contact, or corrode steel or aluminum at specified rates. Common Class 8 products include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, battery acid, pool chemicals, and industrial cleaning compounds.
Packing Group Assignment
Corrosives are assigned packing groups based on their destructive potential: Packing Group I causes visible destruction of skin within 3 minutes, Packing Group II within 1 hour, and Packing Group III causes full thickness destruction within 14 days or corrodes steel/aluminum surfaces.
IATA Air Transport Restrictions
Many Packing Group I corrosives are forbidden on passenger aircraft. Cargo aircraft quantities are limited per package, and corrosives must be segregated from oxidizers, flammable materials, and other incompatible hazard classes. Inner container limits are strictly enforced.
IMDG Ocean Shipping Requirements
Ocean transport of corrosives under IMDG allows larger quantities but requires specific container positioning—generally stowed on deck or in well-ventilated spaces. Segregation from foodstuffs, organic peroxides, and other reactive materials is mandatory.
Packaging and Leak Prevention
Corrosive-resistant inner packaging, absorbent materials between inners and outers, and leak-proof outer packaging are required. Glass, certain plastics, and specialty metals serve as compatible inner container materials depending on the specific corrosive. A freight forwarder with hazmat expertise ensures proper packaging selection.
Pool Chemical Shipping from South Florida
South Florida’s pool service industry ships significant volumes of corrosive pool chemicals—muriatic acid, chlorine compounds, and pH adjusters. These products require proper Class 8 classification and compliant shipping procedures for both air and ocean transport.
