How Container Drayage Works: Step-by-Step Process at Miami Ports
How Container Drayage Works: A Step-by-Step Guide for Miami Importers
If you’re new to importing through PortMiami or Port Everglades, the container drayage process can seem complex. Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown of how your container gets from the vessel to your warehouse.
Step 1: Vessel Arrives and Container Is Discharged
Your container arrives on an ocean vessel and is unloaded by port cranes into the container yard. The terminal operator scans the container and updates its status in the system. This process takes 12-48 hours depending on the vessel size and port congestion.
Step 2: Customs Clearance
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) must clear your container before it can leave the terminal. If your customs broker filed the entry in advance and there are no holds, clearance can happen within hours. If CBP flags your container for examination, expect 2-5 additional days. Your freight forwarder coordinates this process.
Step 3: Container Becomes Available for Pickup
Once cleared, your container status changes to “available” in the terminal system. Your drayage carrier receives notification and dispatches a truck. The free time clock starts — typically 3-5 days before demurrage charges begin.
Step 4: Truck Enters Terminal and Loads Container
The drayage driver enters the port with a valid TWIC card and pickup authorization. The driver proceeds to the assigned container stack, where a port crane or top-pick loads the container onto the chassis. The driver verifies the container number and seal, then exits through the outgate. Terminal turn time averages 1-3 hours.
Step 5: Over-the-Road Transport
The loaded truck drives from the port to your designated delivery location — your warehouse, cross-dock facility, CFS, or transloading center. In Miami-Dade County, this typically takes 30-90 minutes depending on distance and traffic.
Step 6: Delivery and Unloading
At your facility, the driver backs the container to a dock door. Your team breaks the seal, verifies contents, and unloads the container. Unloading a full container typically takes 2-4 hours. The driver then returns the empty container to the designated depot.
