Oxygen Cylinder Shipping: Medical and Industrial O2 IATA IMDG Regulations
Shipping Oxygen Cylinders Under Dangerous Goods Regulations
Oxygen in compressed gas (UN1072, Class 2.2 with 5.1 Oxidizer subsidiary risk) and liquid form (UN1073, Class 2.2/5.1) is essential for medical care, industrial cutting and welding, and water treatment. The oxidizer subsidiary risk makes oxygen more restrictive under IATA DGR and IMDG Code than pure Class 2.2 non-flammable gases due to its fire enhancement properties.
Medical vs. Industrial Oxygen
Medical-grade oxygen (USP) and industrial oxygen are the same chemical but differ in purity certification, cylinder markings, and regulatory oversight. FDA regulates medical oxygen as a prescription drug, adding pharmaceutical distribution requirements to transport compliance. Both grades carry identical dangerous goods classifications and shipping requirements under DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations.
IATA DGR Air Transport
Compressed oxygen cylinders ship by air under IATA DGR Packing Instruction 200. Cylinder specifications, valve protection, and quantity limitations apply. Small medical oxygen cylinders for patient transport have specific exemptions for passenger aircraft under IATA provisions for passengers requiring medical oxygen. Air cargo of commercial oxygen cylinder quantities follows standard compressed gas acceptance procedures.
IMDG Code Ocean Transport
Ocean transport of oxygen cylinders under the IMDG Code requires stowage separated from flammable materials due to the oxidizer subsidiary risk. Segregation from Class 2.1 (flammable gas), Class 3 (flammable liquid), and Class 4 (flammable solid) cargoes is mandatory. Container packing with oxygen must exclude all flammable products from the same container.
Home Healthcare Oxygen Distribution
Home healthcare oxygen delivery serves patients requiring supplemental oxygen therapy. Local distribution routes deliver both compressed gas cylinders and liquid oxygen portable units to patient homes. Delivery drivers must hold CDL hazmat endorsements when vehicle quantities exceed DOT thresholds, and vehicles must carry emergency response information.
Bulk Oxygen Supply Chains
Hospitals, welding shops, and industrial facilities receive bulk liquid oxygen via cryogenic tanker delivery. Dedicated tanker transport follows MC-338 cargo tank specifications. On-site storage systems with automatic reorder triggering ensure uninterrupted supply for critical healthcare and manufacturing operations.
