Freight Shipping from Miami to Guatemala
Most cargo moving from Miami to Guatemala goes by ocean to Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific side or Puerto Santo Tomas de Castilla and Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean side, with air freight through La Aurora International in Guatemala City for urgent and high-value shipments. Guatemala is a CAFTA-DR partner, so qualifying goods can enter duty free with a valid certification of origin.
Choosing the right port and the right mode is mostly a question of where in Guatemala the cargo is going and how much the transit time is worth to you.
Which port to use
Puerto Santo Tomas de Castilla and Puerto Barrios (Caribbean)
These are the natural discharge ports for cargo sailing out of Florida, because the routing stays in the Caribbean basin and avoids the Panama Canal. They serve the eastern half of the country and are the shorter, cheaper option for most Miami-origin freight. Inland trucking to Guatemala City is a manageable day move.
Puerto Quetzal (Pacific)
Puerto Quetzal handles a large share of Guatemala’s container volume and is well positioned for the Pacific corridor and the southwest of the country. From Miami it typically means either a Canal transit or a transshipment, which adds time. It is usually chosen when the consignee is on that side of the country or when the service the shipper uses simply calls there.
Transit times vary substantially by carrier, service string and whether the sailing is direct or transships through Panama, Cartagena or Kingston. Get the actual schedule from your forwarder rather than relying on a generic number; a direct Caribbean service and a transshipped Pacific routing can differ by well over a week.
Ocean options: FCL, LCL and breakbulk
- FCL makes sense from roughly 10 pallets up, or whenever you want the container sealed at origin for customs and security reasons.
- LCL consolidates your pallets with other shippers’ at a Miami container freight station. It is cost-effective for small volumes but adds handling at both ends. See how export consolidation from Miami works.
- Breakbulk and RoRo for machinery, vehicles and anything that does not fit a box. Our guide to RoRo vs. container for vehicles applies to this lane as well.
Air freight through La Aurora
Air out of MIA to Guatemala City is a same-week option for pharmaceuticals, spare parts, perishables and samples. It costs multiples of ocean per kilo, so it is reserved for cargo where the inventory or downtime cost exceeds the freight premium. Dangerous goods, lithium batteries and temperature-controlled shipments each carry additional documentation and packing requirements.
CAFTA-DR and documentation
Guatemala is a party to the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement. Goods that satisfy the agreement’s rules of origin can enter duty free, but the benefit is claimed, not automatic: you need a certification of origin containing the required data elements, and you must be able to support it if audited. Our overview of USMCA and CAFTA-DR duty-free basics covers what qualifies.
Standard export documentation for this lane:
- Commercial invoice with a clear description, HS classification and value
- Packing list with weights and dimensions
- Bill of lading or air waybill
- Certification of origin if claiming CAFTA-DR treatment
- EEI filed in AES with the ITN, where required by value or licensing
- Any product-specific permits — food, agricultural, pharmaceutical and telecom goods commonly need them
Wood packaging must meet ISPM 15 — see export crating and ISPM 15. And settle your Incoterm before quoting; it determines who pays for what and where risk transfers. Our Incoterms guide walks through the practical differences.
Practical notes for this lane
- Guatemalan customs is document-strict. Descriptions that are vague on the commercial invoice cause holds.
- Consignee tax ID (NIT) must be correct on the documents.
- Inland trucking from either coast to Guatemala City or the highlands adds real time; build it into the delivery promise.
- Peak agricultural and holiday seasons tighten equipment. Book earlier than you think you need to.
Frequently asked questions
Which Guatemalan port should I ship to from Miami?
For most Miami-origin cargo the Caribbean ports of Santo Tomas de Castilla and Puerto Barrios are the shorter and usually cheaper option, because the routing stays in the Caribbean and avoids a Panama Canal transit or transshipment. Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific coast makes sense when the consignee is in the southwest of the country or when your carrier’s service calls there.
Do goods from the United States enter Guatemala duty free?
Only if they qualify under CAFTA-DR. Guatemala is a party to the agreement, so goods meeting its rules of origin can enter duty free, but the claim must be supported by a valid certification of origin with the required data elements. Goods that do not qualify pay Guatemala’s normal duty rates.
Should I ship LCL or FCL to Guatemala?
LCL is generally more economical below roughly 10 pallets, while FCL becomes competitive above that and has the advantage of being sealed at origin, which reduces handling and customs friction. LCL adds consolidation at a Miami CFS and deconsolidation at destination, so factor that extra handling time into your delivery date.
