Fire Extinguisher Shipping Regulations: Compressed Gas IATA IMDG Guide
Shipping Fire Extinguishers Under Dangerous Goods Regulations
Fire extinguishers are pressurized vessels classified as Class 2 (Compressed Gases) dangerous goods under both IATA DGR and IMDG Code. While they are safety equipment designed to prevent harm, their pressurized contents and propellant gases make them regulated dangerous goods during transport that require proper classification and handling.
Fire Extinguisher Classifications by Type
Different extinguisher types carry different UN numbers. CO2 extinguishers fall under UN1044 (Class 2.2), dry chemical extinguishers are UN1044 as well, and halon extinguishers are UN1044. Water-based extinguishers pressurized with nitrogen are also UN1044. The universal classification simplifies shipping somewhat, but individual extinguisher specifications still determine packaging and transport requirements.
IATA Requirements for Air Transport
IATA DGR Packing Instruction 200 governs fire extinguisher air transport. Extinguishers must be protected against accidental discharge with safety clips, pins, or covers secured in place. Each unit must have been tested to verify it can withstand the temperature and altitude extremes experienced during flight. Air freight of fire extinguishers requires accurate weight declarations including propellant gas weight.
IMDG Code for Ocean Shipping
Ocean transport under the IMDG Code allows larger quantities of fire extinguishers with appropriate packaging and stowage. Pressurized vessels must be secured against movement during sea transport to prevent valve damage and accidental discharge. Container packing must ensure extinguishers cannot shift or fall during vessel motion.
Refurbished and Recharged Extinguisher Shipping
The fire extinguisher service industry ships large volumes of refurbished and recharged units. These products must meet the same transport requirements as new extinguishers. Hydrostatic testing certificates and service records should accompany shipments to verify vessel integrity. Empty, depressurized extinguishers for recycling have reduced shipping requirements.
Bulk Distribution Logistics
Fire extinguisher distributors rely on efficient LTL shipping and full truckload services to supply building owners, contractors, and fire safety companies. Warehousing of pressurized fire extinguishers requires temperature-controlled storage within manufacturer-specified ranges to maintain pressure integrity and product warranty.
