Why electronics move through Miami
If a phone, laptop, TV panel or networking device is headed to Latin America or the Caribbean, there is a good chance it passes through South Florida first. Miami sits at the intersection of three things electronics distributors need at once: ocean capacity through PortMiami and Port Everglades, dense airline lift out of Miami International Airport, and a bilingual freight community that has been consolidating and re-exporting product southbound for decades.
The practical pattern looks like this. Product arrives from Asia by ocean or by air, clears or moves in bond, gets staged in a Miami-area warehouse, and is then broken down into country-level or customer-level shipments. Some of it is re-exported. Some is sold domestically. Some sits in bonded status while a buyer finalizes payment or an import permit in the destination country. That staging step is where a lot of electronics programs succeed or quietly bleed money.
The local geography matters
Warehouse location drives your drayage and airport transfer costs more than most shippers expect. Medley and Doral put you close to MIA cargo and reasonably close to the ports; Hialeah offers different rate and space tradeoffs on space and access. Serialized inventory and IMEI-level tracking
Generic pallet-level inventory does not work for electronics. Warranty administration, grey-market control, carrier activation, and theft investigation all depend on knowing which specific unit went where.
That means your WMS and your 3PL’s receiving process need to capture serial or IMEI at intake, associate it with a license plate or carton, and carry that association through pick, pack and outbound. A few things worth insisting on:
- Serial capture at receipt, not reconstructed later from vendor packing lists.
- Serial-to-order association on the outbound record, so you can answer “where did unit X go” without a warehouse walk.
- Lot or batch controls where firmware revisions or regional SKUs differ.
- Cycle counts that reconcile at the serial level for high-value SKUs, not just quantity.

Almost every consumer electronics program touches lithium batteries — installed in devices, packed with equipment, or shipped standalone as spares. Lithium-ion cells and batteries are assigned UN numbers such as UN 3480 and UN 3481, and their transport by air, ocean and road is governed by regulations that are revised regularly.
This is not an area to work from memory, a blog post, or last year’s SOP. State-of-charge expectations, watt-hour thresholds, packaging requirements, marking and labeling, and what may travel on passenger versus cargo aircraft are all defined in the current editions of the applicable rules — DOT/49 CFR for U.S. ground, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for air, and the IMDG Code for ocean — and they do change.
